FLARM targets display - height values replaced with arrows
« on: December 29, 2019, 11:42:52 PM »
Yes we are flying again in Australia - often in smoke  :(
The change from displaying altitude differences (ft/m) with arrows just buggers me again.
You see a target at 40km distance it always shows at the same level __
At 30km still the same
At 20km the same
At 5km it stays the same and you get nervous
At 2km it suddenly changes to arrows up, down or it stays level
Conclusion
I hate it
Why not make it a pilots choice selection?
 :-\
Happy 2020
 :)

I got over ruled on that one.  I had the same reaction when I got my hands on the beta.

Which was the last SW version with altidude difference shown.
I would like to figure out if I loose essentials going backwards ;-)

My recommendation is a second flarm display.  I use flarmview 57 for last several seasons.  It is a good companion to CN2 although small font sizes make challenging to read.

Yes
I reactivated my FLARM View yesterday
Another way would be to remove the arrows and show high targets blue, low ones green and close ones red.
Cheers

It's more valuable to have the relative altitude in digital form than the climb rate.

btw... the climb rates reported by CN2 aren't reliable.  The FV rates are much better.  Maybe FV is filtering the data stream in some fashion to smooth out the data?  I am guessing that what CN2 does is update the climb rates for any given flarm target "whenever it's convenient" and it probably just copies whatever the current reported climb rate is from the flarm data stream.   It's a really noisy stream (no TE compensation, no filtering).  On FV, you see thermal entry transients and such, but it isn't as noisy as I'd expect, so I bet they filter.  Good for them.

So Chris, I have a question for you: what sort of range is typical for flarm (or power flarm) in Europe?

In US we have powerflarm only and range depends enormously on quality of installation at both ends.  I have a very good install and I can receive most well installed power flarm equipped gliders up to about 10 km.

My glider is in Australia, so I cannot give you an answer for Europe.
The Tocumwal groundstation sees me to a distance of about 30km.
I can see my friend - as well having dipole antennas on top of the instrument cover - up to 20km, but in general other gliders average to about 5km. I willlink some flights together and do another range check at the FLARM website.
