Flarm Warning on CN (video link)
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:47:22 AM »
Here's a screen grab from gopro video I shot Friday, playing around in the White Mtns with Jim David.  Jim wanted to gain a little experience with flarm and I wanted to give our updated (2.2.0.73) flarm warning a live fire test.  I'll post a video later than shows everything in action with audio.

Approaching sailplane visible immediately left of flarm antenna.

Here's a 30 second video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APMTBfz6XZ0

Beeping sound is Butterfly PowerFlarm display, voice alert is ClearNav with external speaker.

 :) looks nice Evan
Is there an intention to show the traffic situation, displaying all gliders in reception range with vertical speed and optional track (similar to the LX9000)?

If you'd like to take a shot at describing what it is you'd like to have and why, I'm certainly willing to read and consider.  I think it's fair to say that on the whole the CN team isn't inclined to try to do too much more than we already are with tactical flarm info.  If we're missing something big here, by all means let us know.

Range is pretty short though...

My Swiss friends told me that FLARM traffic will be displayed to max 2-3km while PCAS and ADS-B traffic is shown to 10-15km distance.
Airplane symbol colors can be chosen dependent of lower, higher or same height.
Timeout can be selected of targets for which the signal is lost, before the symbol is deleted.
Track can be selected to be shown (X seconds trail).

We're already displaying flarm & adsb targets with relative altitude and climb rate (all targets show as gliders).  Max range and vertical range can be easily configured in flarm (e.g. to filter airliners).  PCAS contacts are displayed as circles (personally I find this useless, leave it off, but it's there for guys that want it).

So I guess we're talking about the target list, flarm net IDs, snail trails and symbology?  I've been lobbying for distinctive symbology for ADSB vs flarm contacts for a while, just hasn't made the todo list.

oops - thanks
I have to cross check my settings and test it again together with our tow plane
The list is not interesting (only pictured it for showing the distances)

 ;) Thanks Evan
It was just a map scaling issue - so I did no see the other gliders on the normal screen displayed.
But how did you get the small FLARM box displayed on your CN?
Greetings

The small box warning is new in 2.2.0.73 and replaces the old split screen warning with black background.

:) ok - did not fly since the upgrade.
winter is slowly ending in southern Australia and I hope to get some air under the wings soon.
As soon as the CNv is back from calibration the glider is ready and airworthiness check is in 2 weeks.
enjoy the rest of the summer Evan
